Chancroid is a form of contamination that is primarily seen in a sexually exposed part of the skin. The genital lesion usually occurs on the penis but may irregularly appear in the anal or mouth area. It begins with a soft lump that appears from three to ten days following sexual exposure. The lumps start to blow up and become an open sore which is commonly distressing. Erythromycin is another drug taken orally at 500 mg four times daily for a period of 7 days.

Whatever the treatment prescribed, the open sore must get better within a week. If the patient will not get any better, his condition must be reassessed so that the other causes of open sore can be well-established. Persons who have HIV infections have great possibilities of deteriorating treatment for chancroid. Close monitoring of these patients is necessary to make sure that the medication is working. Additionally, individuals who are diagnosed of chancroid must undergo other kinds of examinations for some types of sexually transmitted diseases like Chlamydia and gonorrhea, especially if more than one infection is present.

Preventive measures for chancroid exposure
