Fluorouracil: A Look At One Of The Genital Warts Medications

Fluorouracil is one of the highly-recognized genital warts medications. Learn about all the facts behind the benefits and risks of using this product.

Genital warts medications abound in the market.  This is because the disease needs to be solved.  Although, there is no guarantee you will not have it again, there is still a need for you to get rid of the discomfort brought about by the disease.  After all, you will never want to feel itchiness on your genitalia.  One of the known medications is fluorouracil.

Fluorouracil is a topical solution to help treat the inconveniences you feel with regards genital warts.  In general it is useful in treating other skin conditions which causes the rapid multiplication of skin cells.  Simply put, the product is made in order to stop the spread of a skin disorder to other parts of the body.  Besides genital warts, it is conveniently prescribed for people with psoriasis and porokeratosis.

Other facts on fluorouracil

Knowing a product makes sense by scrutinizing what it is about.  Aside from gaining knowledge on the conditions which fluorouracil may treat, it is best to take a look at other facts pertinent to the efficacy of the product.  Take a look at the following examples:

•    Dosage.  This cream or solution is best applied on affected areas twice a day.  It is important to cleanse the area with water before you apply fluorouracil.  The efficacy of the product may vary from one person to another and usually takes four weeks before visible results are seen.  Use your fingertip to rub the product in small amounts to the skin experiencing the problem.  In a couple of days, you may experience blisters, redness or sores on the affected areas. Use tretinoin two weeks before starting fluorouracil for best results.

•    Contraindications.  The topical solution is not known to have drug interactions.  However, despite this fact, pregnant mothers are not allowed to use fluorouracil because of the damage it may bring to the baby in the mother’s womb.  Lactating women are also advised not to make use of the product.

•    Side Effects.  Burning sensation or irritation are the first signs for first-time users of the product.  This discomfort is considered normal.  Avoid sun exposure since it may cause sensitivity to the skin.  Although the manifestations of the effect of the sun’s rays on the skin may only be seen after five to ten days of using fluorouracil, it is still best to take the necessary precautions.  In like manner, you are advised to use sunscreen with SPF 15.

For some individuals, lightening of the skin may be evident after using this product.  Some patients may have complications like white marks or scarring, secondary bacterial infections or even excessive inflammation of the skin.

You must take note that fluorouracil is a prescription drug.  You should not buy it over-the-counter without any advice from your doctor.  It is most likely for you to combat the side effects of using the product by means of making some patch tests on unexposed areas of the skin.  Follow the instructions of your physicians as well.
