Cryotherapy is one of the genital warts treatments conducted in your doctor’s clinic. Learn its different uses and applications as well as how you should prepare for the procedure.
As specified in the overview of the genital warts treatments, there are two ways by which the treatment may be administered. First is the patient-administered (one which is done in the patient’s own home) and the other is provider-administered (done with the help of a medical practitioner or expert). One of the treatments categorized under the provider-administered medications is cryotherapy.
There are other terms by which cryotherapy is known. It is often referred to as cryosurgery or cryoablation. The process is conducted in order to kill or destroy tissues. It is helpful in the genital warts problem and even in the prevention of cervical cancer. It makes use of frozen liquid nitrogen for the success of the procedure.
The applications and uses of cryotherapy
Cryotherapy may be done in three ways. The first is through topical administration commonly used for skin lesions such as genital warts. The said procedure is also helpful for eye lesions. The second technique is called the percutaneous cryotherapy which makes use of an applicator to reach deeper lesions which may not be reached by the topical solution. The last of the applications is called the surgical cryotherapy which needs some invasive procedure to reach the lesions which may already be affecting some of the vital organs of the body.
Obviously, the topical cryotherapy procedure is favored by more patients. However, since these may not help for internal genital warts, the other two procedures may be necessary depending on your preference and your doctor’s diagnosis and recommendations. Aside from genital warts, cryotherapy is useful in treating other diseases such as skin tumors and cancers, pre-cancerous skin moles, nodules, freckles and cancers such as retinal cancer in children, liver, prostate and cervical cancers.
Preparing for cryotherapy
Just like any other procedures conducted in the comfort of your physician’s clinic, cryotherapy requires ample preparation on your part as a patient. Some of the most common things done to help you know what to expect during the procedure are:
• Taking of some medications. Your doctor will usually require you to take at least 400 mg of any ibuprofen within half an hour before the procedure. This will help you with any discomforts you may feel during the process. Antibiotics may also be given in order to get rid of possibilities of infections.
• Make the necessary discussions with your doctor. As the patient, you know very well what you are currently undergoing thorough. This requires you to report all the medications you are taking in or the illnesses you have beside the genital warts which you want treated. If you are pregnant, please inform your doctor immediately. This is because there are some x-ray procedures which are needed before the cryotherapy proper.
Preparing for cryotherapy is just like the way you prepare for other medications. You need to be attentive to all the instructions your doctor will give you. You must also be more than willing to participate during the consultation period. If you want to seek genital warts treatments, your attitude should include perseverance and willingness.
