There are common and life-threatening side effects associated with the HPV vaccine. It is important to take note of such adverse reactions.
Just like other vaccines, there had been reported serious side effects of HPV vaccine. But like any other medicine, you should watch out for its serious complications. The most common complaint of patients who gets the HPV vaccine is pain in the injection site. This is a common symptom to almost all vaccines or medication that uses an injection to deliver the drug or vaccine. The entry of a foreign object to the patients’ skin will signal pain receptors thereby the feeling of pain.
Common HPV vaccine side effects
Redness and swelling also appear. These signs are usually caused by the inflammatory response brought about by the trauma (injection) to the skin. It is a physiological response to see redness and swelling to the site and it is not life threatening.
Mild to moderate fever is another common side effect. This is usually accompanied by the redness or swelling and maybe a part of the inflammatory response too. Remember that when your red blood cells are in clusters, the body temperature rises.
Itching at the injection site may be caused not by the HPV vaccine itself. The reason behind the itching may be due to the body’s response to the syringe. This is usually referred to as a foreign object.
Life threatening allergic reactions, although very rare, may also occur. These types of reactions occur a few minutes to few hours after the vaccination. Note that people who are allergic to yeast or other contents of the vaccine cannot get the HPV vaccine. It may cause more damage than good if taken. Difficulty of breathing, restlessness, cold and clammy skin and cyanosis are some signs of allergic reactions. You should report to the doctor immediately if these signs are seen.
What to do when you experience side effects
Although life threatening side effects are not common in patients vaccinated with HPV vaccines, precautions are still advised in case serious side effects may appear.
1. Have a brief knowledge of the common side effects of HPV vaccine. Identifying the side effects will help you differentiate it from other conditions.
2. Watch out for immediate side effects. This occurs minutes after the injection. Allergy is the most common cause of immediate side effects and not the drug itself.
3. Difficulty of breathing and high fever are life threatening. Go to the doctor or emergency room right away.
4. A few days after the injection, you may feel pain, redness and swelling at the injection site. These are common side effects and are not life threatening. Mild to moderate fever are also common. These side effects last only a few days and will go away on their own.
5. If you have other signs and symptoms, you can report it to your doctor so he can provide you with proper intervention.
Like many other vaccines and medication, continuous monitoring and evaluation for unusual and severe problems are done. This will ensure your safety and efficacy as well. Be very keen when it comes to observing the side effects of HPV vaccines.
